Don't expect EV-DO, but you'll still make off with AGPS, a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and a dedicated text button (surprisingly important in this market segment) for your hard-earned $29.99 on contract in your choice of Impulsive Pink and Deep Blue.

[Via Boy Genius Report]
Sanyo SCP-2700 now available on Sprint; inspires busy thumbs, not much else originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 12 May 2009 10:42:00 EST. That kind of multiband tech requires really awesome miniaturized antenna tech, and a Spanish company, Fractus, says that a whole bunch of the world's top-tier manufacturers are blatantly violating its IP in the field. It's suing Samsung, LG, RIM, Pantech, Kyocera, Palm, HTC, Sharp, UTStarcom, and Sanyo for allegedly infringing on a total of nine patents it holds; the company doesn't specify what kinds of damages it's seeking, but something tells us it's a huge-ish number. Considering that we're pretty big fans of reception, this is a suit we can kinda get behind -- assuming Fractus' claims are legit, of course.
With devices like the Samsung Magnet competing directly in this mega-low-cost portrait QWERTY space, expectations for quality and style are pretty frigging high here. Does Sprint's SCP-2700 from Sanyo deliver? Truth be told, we came away with the impression that it didn't feel good enough to cost $29.99 on contract after rebate; free before rebate, perhaps, but that's about it. We found that the 2700's awfully thick and bulky (while still feeling cheaply light) for its lease in life as a fashion-forward texting machine for the kiddies -- odds are that since it's a Sanyo it'll probably be able to take a beating, but what kind of 15 year-old cares about reliability? Are these the people that grow up to be actuaries?
As the handset news begins to flow at CTIA, we've got a new duo from Kyocera splashing down in CDMA land. Up first is the G2GO M2000 (a follow to the Lingo M1000), which sports a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel camera, 2.4-inch QVGA display, MP3 player, an accelerometer and a microSD expansion slot. Next, we're looking at the Laylo M1400 slider (shown after the break), which features Bluetooth 2.0, a calculator, scheduler, stopwatch, timer, tip calculator and little else. Not a peep on pricing, availability or what carriers will be picking this up, but we'll keep an ear to the ground for more.

[Via MobileBurn]
Continue reading Kyocera intros G2GO M2000 and Laylo M1400 handsets at CTIA

Kyocera intros G2GO M2000 and Laylo M1400 handsets at CTIA originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 17:19:00 EST. Not that we're blindsided by its official introduction or anything, but it's still good to see Sanyo's SCP-2700 in one clear, crisp, cohesive press photo. Available exclusively on Sprint, the QWERTY-equipped handset boasts a 1.3 megapixel camera, Sprint Navigation, threaded text messaging support and Bluetooth. Prospective buyers will need to choose between Impulsive Pink (with a subtle floral overlay) and Deep Blue (which has a tactile square designer pattern on its back), but considering that you've got until May 10th to decide, we'd say there's no real hurry. Oh, and pricing? $29.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and signing away your cellular soul for two long, painful years.
Sanyo's QWERTY-packin' SCP-2700 lands on Sprint originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 31 Mar 2009 14:48:00 EST. There aren't terribly many surprises in the latest roadmap docs leaked out of Sprint, but there are a couple -- and we finally have some target launch windows around a few of the more anticipates devices we've been expecting this year. Perhaps least surprisingly, the Palm P100 -- that's the Pre for you lay folk -- is still on track for the second quarter of the year, which could mean anything between April and June. Staying in the landscape QWERTY smartphone realm, we'll see the HTC Cedar (or Willow, depending on which slide you're looking at) and a new Samsung Ace -- creatively named the Ace II -- in the second and third quarters, respectively. The landscape HTC Rhodium will likely replace the Touch Pro in the third quarter, and the hotly (and we do mean hotly) anticipated BlackBerry Niagara will be hitting in the same three-month period.

Things are getting interesting down in the dumbphone realm, too, with both the Instinct Mini and a true Instinct successor -- the Dash with an HVGA display -- in the pipe. The Sanyo 2700, dual-slide Samsung Cello, and the Samsung Chianti (which looks suspiciously like a Propel) will all follow the Rumor 2 down the text-centric path, and a handful of new ultra-basic devices will fill in the bottom of the range. For data, Sprint will be launching Novatel's totally awesome MiFi portable hotspot, which warms our hearts. What doesn't warm our hearts is the utter void of Android devices here -- but we can hold out hope, and as always, all of this is subject to change. Stay tuned!

[Via Boy Genius Report]
Sprint's 2009 roadmap comes to light, packed with goodies originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 16 Mar 2009 15:46:00 EST. Okay, so we can safely establish that Sanyo's SCP-2700 QWERTY phone will come in at least two colors: blue, which we've previously seen, and now a stylized floral pink. At the $39.99 on-contract pricing we're hearing ("Sanyo" and "cheap" usually go hand-in-hand in Sprint's lineup), this could be a big winner -- tweeners will probably be able to beat on it for a year or more with little to no ill effect. Come on, Sanyo fans, you know you're frothing at the mouth right now, no need to hide it. We're all friends here.
Sanyo users on Sprint seem to swear by the quality of their phones more than any other group of fanboys and girls -- only problem is, the Kyocera division's selection has amounted to little more than a bunch of low-end flips for the past year. Where's the excitement? That might come in with this little gem, which our tipster alleges to be the SCP-2700 -- not a form factor Sanyo has a lot of experience with, but then again, it's no secret that text-centric feature phones are the name of the game for American carriers these days. It's no Katana, but then again, that's kind of the idea. We'll keep you updated as we hear more.

[Thanks, r0fl]
Sanyo's SCP-2700 for Sprint is decidedly not another Katana originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 02 Mar 2009 08:58:00 EST. The biggest shake-up comes in the company's U.S. offices, which will now be focused exclusively sales, support, and business development, leaving all the handset design to be done at its Kyocera Wireless and Sanyo Telecom units in Japan, which themselves will be further consolidated in an effort to "enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of the combined global handset business," according to company President Rodney Lanthorne. All of that will result in the loss of some 360 jobs, most of which will come from Kyocera's operations in San Diego and Chatsworth, California, as well as its subsidiary in Bangalore, India.

[Via Phone Scoop]
Kyocera consolidates handset businesses, cuts 360 jobs in the process originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 18:34:00 EST. Similar pricing for the PRO-700 with $199 for a 3-year stint, $249 for 2, and contract-free ownership will set you back $399. We had a sneaking suspicion that Sprint couldn't leave well enough alone with its current Katana Eclipse, and sure enough, we're now seeing reports that a mildly reworked Katana Eclipse X is on its way. As predicted, it'll be loosed in Nightlife Black and Hypnotic Pink, and the main difference over the existing iteration will be the One Click application, which enables users to "organize and personalize their homescreens with the most used applications, including Google search and e-mail." Everything else should remain the same, though we haven't heard if price is included in "everything."

[Via CNET]
Sprint gives revamped Katana Eclipse X its One Click interface originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 18:09:00 EST.
Anybody who has been on a modern jet during a longhaul flight may remember seeing mellow shades of red, blue, and other calm colors during the trip. Well, KDDI and Sanyo's W64SA is set to do the same, but rather than calmly lifting the cash out of your wallet for senseless duty-free purchases, they're hoping the idea will sell you on this set. The W64SA features Bluetooth, a 2.8-inch LCD, 2 megapixel camera, remote wipe, mobile wallet, and a huge list of software titles you'll never, ever, enjoy over here. The two LEDs on the front will change depending on motion or activity -- Shake Illumi -- and slowly fade out when the set is sitting still -- Illumi Drop. No word on pricing, but if we hear something from KDDI au, we'll be sure to fill the gap. Sanyo handsets are like cats: you either love them or you just really, really loathe them with every fiber of your being. Sprint and Sanyo both seem to be pretty okay with that; clearly, not every phone in Sprint's lineup is going to be for everyone, and the Katana Eclipse is no different. Sanyo fanatic or not, though, our gripe list added up pretty quickly with this one, so would-be buyers might want to put it through a good workout in store before taking the plunge.

The phone's hinge design causes the upper half of the phone to rest behind the bottom half; that is, the intersection of the planes containing the two halves is not the center of the hinge (think MacBook, for example). We thought that felt a little weird against our face and made it more difficult to get a good seal between the earpiece and our ear. Also, the front of the phone -- arguably the most attractive of any Katana to date -- isn't the most user-friendly. The tiny external display was difficult to read even in a moderate amount of shade, and the music controls are nearly flush with the shell which makes actuating them trickier than it should be. Speaking of displays, the primary one is pretty small, leaving a huge gray bezel with no function whatsoever (don't be fooled by the white dots at the bottom, they serve no function other than to make you think that they're touch-sensitive soft buttons, which they're not).

It's not all doom and gloom, though. The dedicated speaker key is a nifty parlor trick, you've got a 1.3 megapixel cam in there, and it does stereo Bluetooth. Plus, it's a Sanyo, and we know that for a few of you out there, that's all that matters. For you guys, you'll be able to pick up the Katana Eclipse immediately for $99.99 with a new two-year contract.

Gallery: Sanyo Katana Eclipse hands-on

Sanyo Katana Eclipse hands-on originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 18 Aug 2008 09:00:00 EST.
Sprint's iDEN lineup certainly seems to be alive and well -- despite what we've heard stating the opposite -- with the 2008 / 2009 roadmap boasting 10 new phones by Q2 2009. Starring in the outing -- and arguably its piece de resistance -- is the BlackBerry 8350i, a WiFi equipped, 2 megapixel shooter-toting, GPS-enabled device set to ship in Q4 this year. Also up for grabs in Q4 are the Mil-Spec GPS-enabled Motorola i576, and the mysterious -- we say mysterious as we've no real details yet -- Motorola i776. Q1 2009 ushers in with the QWERTY Motorola Monolith, the walkie-talkie styled rxxxx, what looks to be a Motorola V8, and some barely noteworthy Sanyo set. Motorola's Mil-Spec Immersion, the Sanyo Pro 410, and a Samsung music-centric slider will see us into Q2 next year. Sadly, details are all still very thin, but we suspect the releases will find their way onto these pages in the coming weeks and months.

Relax, take your shoes back off and put down your car keys -- the Katana Eclipse still isn't released, so there's no point in running down to your local Sprint kiosk just yet. We do, however, have a full range of photography that should temporarily keep would-be buyers' heads from exploding for a dearth of information about Sanyo's latest American clam. The phone looks like it might be the most attractive Katana to date, and Sanyo owners tend to be among the most fiercely loyal around, so we think this one should get some good play at the cash register. Check out the gallery, and keep the drool off your keyboard for once, will ya?

[Thanks, Opie33]

Gallery: Sanyo's Katana Eclipse in all its glory

Sanyo's Katana Eclipse in all its glory originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 08:33:00 EST. Well, there you have it: the very real-looking Katana Eclipse pictured in that leaked Sprint roadmap is, in fact, real. The upcoming clamshell flew right on through the FCC recently (filed under new parent Kyocera's name, no less) bearing the expected external music controls and an evolutionary design that's kinda sorta reminiscent of everything that makes the Katana series, the Katana series. We've got EV-DO in here, too, so if we had to guess, this will end up slotting in somewhere toward the bottom of Sprint's midrange when it goes on sale -- which may or may not be August 17 depending on the accuracy of said roadmap.

[Via Cell Phone Signal, thanks Marco]
Sanyo Katana Eclipse does the FCC mating ritual originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 21 Jul 2008 14:59:00 EST. Though the document doesn't exactly look magazine-quality, this is a case where we'd argue that it doesn't have to be to be real; it's clearly for internal use only, for one thing, and secondly, we don't know where else the picture of that new Sanyo Katana Eclipse would come from. The Eclipse is just one of several pretty nifty releases claimed to be lined up between now and September, with the Motorola VE20 Vegas and a pair of data cards joining it on August 17. September should bring the Motorola i365 and V950 Renegade, Samsung m220 and m320, and the HTC MP6950 -- which we assume to be either the Touch Diamond or Touch Pro -- clearly in desperate need of an actual name by the time it launches.
Unmistakable, aren't they? Sure, it may have a new and fancy name, but QChat-enabled PTT devices aren't fooling anyone. Sprint's latest and greatest are both humming along on the EV-DO Rev.
If any of you feared you might never again be forced to listen to loud walkie-talkie conversations from iDEN handsets, start hating, as the service is growing, not shrinking. Sprint has announced the new QChat service is expanding into 40+ new markets and a small team of new handsets are arriving to herald the new service's launch. Markets like Austin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Orlando are set to go for June 15th through all of Sprint's traditional retail channels. The LG LX400 boasts a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS, and noise reduction and can be had for $79.99 on a two-year deal. The Samsung Z400 is an ultra-rugged 810F military spec. affair with a sad 1.3 megapixel cam, Sprint Navigation, and Bluetooth, in a tough clamshell form factor for $99.00. Two Sanyo sets are also on the list, the $79.99 PRO-700 features a tough rubber housing, Bluetooth, plus Sprint Navigation, and the $49.99 PRO-200 which packs the same navigation features as the others, Bluetooth, and not much else. So with thanks to Qualcomm's QChat technology and Sprint's EV-DO network we'll be putting up with enjoying push to talk for the foreseeable future.

[Via PhoneScoop]

In Japan, carriers tend to release new models in giant, blockbuster batches -- seasonal "collections" that leave the rest of the world green with envy. KDDI au is no exception, having just announced its predictably spectacular Summer 2008 lineup with entrants from Kyocera, Sony Ericsson, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba, Casio, and Korea's Pantech. Here's the rundown:

Hitachi Wooo W62H. KDDI is emphasizing this one's video and 3D gaming capabilities, both of which are assisted by the presence of a 2-way hinge for flipping out the screen in a landscape orientation. Comes in blue, silver, and black.

Sharp W62SH. The FM transmitter's kinda cool, and the three-inch WVGA screen should be perfect for watching Spiderman 2, which comes bundled with the phone. Purple, white, and gold are the color choices.

Sanyo W63SA. Global CDMA roaming and an integrated English-Japanese dictionary makes this one a solid choice for world travelers. Get this one in red, silver, or black.

Toshiba Sportio. As the name implies, this one's all about burnin' those calories with an integrated calorie counter. The candybar form factor is a refreshing change of pace in the lineup, but too bad about that QVGA display! Five colors to choose from here: orange, black, white, green, and red.

Casio G'zOne W62CA. Like its counterparts on Verizon, the W62CA is designed to take a beating without falling apart. It's impact resistant and waterproof, features a compass, thermometer, and GPS, and naturally, one-seg TV. Get it in green, black, or white.

Sanyo W64SA. This fashionable flip has some crazy light effects to go along with its crazy selection of colors, but other than that, it seems pretty pedestrian. If you can call a 2.8-inch WVGA display "pedestrian." It's available in pink, white, yellow, and black.

Sony Ericsson Full Change re. The WQVGA display is one metric ton of weak sauce, but as the "Full Change" name suggests, five individual pieces can be removed from the front, back, and top of the phone to create a totally customized handset. Shell choices include white, pink, green, orange, and silver.

Toshiba W62T. Seriously, what's up with all this WQVGA garbage? The W62T appears destined for the midrange, though the 3.2 megapixel camera ain't bad. Colors for this one are gold, pink, and black.

Kyocera W64K. Possibly leading up the bottom end of the collection, the W64K rocks a WQVGA display and a weak 2 megapixel cam. We see "basic capabilities" mentioned a couple times in the translated description for it, so that says pretty much all we need to know. Pink and gold are the only color options here.

Kyocera W62K. Whoa, and we thought the W64K was low end! 1.3 megapixel cam, QVGA (yeah, that's right, QVGA, not WQVGA) display. 'Nuff said. Beige, blue, and black are the choices here.

Kyocera W63K. The W63K candybar is just 10.8mm thick, but we're still not sure that we can forgive it for a meager 1.3 megapixel camera. Kyocera's seriously dragging here, in case you haven't noticed the trend. Black, burgundy, and beige.

Pantech W62PT. The only phone in the lineup sourced from a non-Japanese manufacturer, the Pantech's nothing to get too excited about with a QVGA display, but the presence of quick dial buttons directly below the screen indicates that this one's designed for folks that are looking for a simple, easy-to-use phone that's just enough to make voice calls -- and ironically, it's still better than a good percentage of the phones you'll find elsewhere in the world. It'll come in silver, gold, and pink.

Not a bad showing, especially considering that KDDI au stands out as Japan's major CDMA carrier in a country dominated by FOMA. Get 'em while they're hot, folks -- you know it's just a few months before the next collection debuts!
KDDI au announces Summer 2008 collection originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sun, 08 Jun 2008 14:14:00 EST. So that rumored June 15 launch date for QChat in retail channels was pretty much spot on, it seems, according to the latest Brightpoint launch sheet for the month. The shot, posted on the always-chatty HoFo, reveals that Sanyo's PRO-200 and PRO-700 are expected for $249.99 and $279.99, respectively, while the Samsung Z400 comes in at $299.99 and the LG LX400 at $279.99. That's not a very wide range of price points for the initial round of QChat devices, a sign that Sprint's probably totally cool limiting interest in the service to business customers initially. Also due on the 15th is a fresh USB modem, the U680, which is being touted as "the only USB Modem that fits the design of the MacBook AIR [sic] without using USB connection cable." It's the Franklin CDU-680 in its generic form, and it's indeed pretty small as external data sticks go -- music to the ears of Air owners, we'd imagine.

[Via PhoneNews]
Sprint's June launch calendar confirms QChat availability originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 27 May 2008 17:50:00 EST. From rumor to sale in about two months' time -- not bad. The Sanyo Katana LX is now available through Sprint, offering a worthy replacement to the aging Katana II at the same price point, $49.99 on contract after rebates. Fashion is the name of the game here, thanks to a trendy see-through front cover revealing an external display underneath and availability in three collect-'em-all colors: Liquid Graphite, Pacific Blue, and Elegant Pink. You're also going to get GPS, Bluetooth, and a VGA cam -- but one thing you aren't going to get is EV-DO, so steer clear if you have a need for speedy bits.

[Thanks, Chuck and Jorge]
Sanyo Katana LX now available on Sprint originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 21 Apr 2008 10:10:00 EST. So that's where the external display is! From the FCC documentation, we couldn't really make out what was up with Sanyo's Katana LX -- a phone that's allegedly destined to replace the lowly Katana II -- but it turns out that the display is hidden under a semi-translucent casing. This is a trick we've seen employed by various manufacturers in the past, often with lovely results, and it's looking pretty solid this time around, too. With any luck we'll see this one in the flesh next month. Follow the break for another glamor shot, if you're so inclined.
Continue reading Sanyo Katana LX for Sprint rears its shiny head

Sanyo Katana LX for Sprint rears its shiny head originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 09:55:00 EST. That rumored Katana II replacement, the creatively-named Katana LX, is looking more real than ever now that the FCC's labs have put it through the ringer. If the remainder of the rumor ends up checking out, the LX ended up passing the federal checkpoint just in the nick of time en route to an April launch. One thing that concerns us just a tad is that we're having a hard time finding an external display or a camera, though we imagine it's possible that one or both are crammed into that black area near the hinge; if not, this bad boy's going to make a pretty miserable Katana II successor since the older model carried both features. Needless to say, EV-DO isn't in the cards either way.
Sprint's Sanyo Katana LX gets the FCC rundown originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 19:05:00 EST. Word on the street is that customers might be getting their first crack at Sprint's QChat wares rather soon -- April 16, to be exact. The news comes from phoneArena, which reports that the LG LX400 (pictured) will be launching alongside Sanyo's PRO-200 and PRO-700 on that fateful day, presumably along with the Direct Connect tech (and iDEN heir apparent) itself. The LG is rumored to be coming in at an SRP of $279.99, while the two Sanyos check in at $249.99 and $269.99, respectively. Also slated for April launches are the BlackBerry Curve 8330 in "titanium" along with Sanyo's Katana LX, a replacement for the Katana II that'll presumably keep its slim profile but carry over the forgettable VGA cam.
QChat phones, others launching on Sprint mid-April? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sat, 23 Feb 2008 23:02:00 EST. The trickle of QChat-enabled handsets for Sprint's Direct Connect push-to-talk service is in the process of turning into a flood now that manufacturers don't have to worry about dealing with Moto's proprietary iDEN network, and Sanyo is the latest to join the party with a pair of models named SCP-PRO200 and SCP-PRO700. As the names and ID label renderings imply, these will likely be ruggedized models targeted squarely at the same audience that currently snaps up iDEN equipment, so go ahead and get ready to drop these things, splash them with mud, and generally treat them like poo. Both are equipped with Bluetooth and EV-DO, so they'll be able to hold their own with the remainder of Sprint's midrange whenever they get around to launching.

[Via Phone Scoop]

Read - Sanyo SCP-PRO200
Read - Sanyo SCP-PRO700
Sanyo alive and well, pushes first Direct Connect phones through FCC originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sat, 23 Feb 2008 13:55:00 EST. Yes, friends, the time has come once again for Japan's carriers to upheave their still-fresh lineups and replace them with even fresher ones. Here we take a look at KDDI au's just-announced Spring '08 collection, including a model with an e-ink display and another with a 3 inch OLED. Wowza! Note that not all of these handsets are new -- some are carryovers from the carrier's Winter '07 collection, so we won't be covering those here. Sanyo just made official what's been rumored since August: the sale of its troubled cellphone division to Kyocera. The deal is set for completion on April 1st at a value of about $350 million. The deal involves about 2,000 employees moving from Sanyo's mobile phone operation to Kyocera where they can reminisce with ex-Qualcommers about the good ol' days.
Sanyo sells cellphones (by the seashore) to Kyocera originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 21 Jan 2008 07:00:00 EST. Although we came across Samsung's SGH-F490 during a recent FCC scavenger hunt, it, along with the previously announced P720 were recently spotted at an event in Ukraine. Unfortunately, most is lost in translation, but we can gather that the latter will rock dual SIM card slots, a 3-megapixel camera, a 320 x 240 resolution display and a price tag upwards of $500. As for the F490, you can expect a 5-megapixel camera, touchscreen display (presumably with tactile feedback support), 432 x 240 resolution panel and an estimated cost of $600. Beyond that, it seems that we'll have to wait before finding out more, but considering the Q2 / Q1 2008 release dates (respectively), we ought not be waiting long.

[Via UnwiredView]
Samsung's F490 / P720 handsets get outed originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 24 Dec 2007 09:49:00 EST. From Sprint's roadmap to the FCC to a Radio Shack shelf near you, Sprint has decided to launch the entry-level Sanyo S1 right on time. Equipped with nothing more than a dual-band CDMA radio, speaker phone, and Bluetooth 2.0, it leaves much to be desired for all but the most basic tastes. You can catch the uber-thin candybar at Radio Shack now $220 full retail, $95 on a one year, or free after a two year contract.

[Thanks, Brandon]
Sprint launches entry-level Sanyo S1 for the masses originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 02:08:00 EST.
Kyocera has already shown it was pretty serious about buying Sanyo's cellphone business, and it now looks like that persistence may be about to pay off, with the two companies reportedly all but set to announce a deal. While the final price has apparently yet to be fixed, Nikkei says Kyocera has offered 70 billion yen (or nearly $600 million) for the business, although that price may wind up being a bit lower after Kyocera has done all its due diligence. As Reuters points out, if the deal goes through, it would make Kyocera the world's seventh-largest cellphone business, up from its current 10th place position. That possibility should become clear soon enough, as the deal could apparently be announced as early as today.

The move is of little consequence outside of Japan as far as we can tell, but it's yet another sign that Sanyo's looking to strip itself of most of its non-core businesses, phones included. If anything, we'd say this all strengthens the case for an imminent sale of the grand prize to Kyocera, a move that would instantly boost the manufacturer's American presence through Sanyo's extensive dealings with Sprint. Sure, it was all fun and games when folks were just tossing about the idea, but it seems that Kyocera may be taking this whole deal a bit more seriously than we previously assumed. Reportedly, "Kyocera [is aiming] to buy Sanyo's cell phone operations for about ¥50 billion ($435 million)," and just in case you still had doubts, these same sources are suggesting that the two are "entering the final stage of talks." Of course, a Kyocera spokeswoman declined to comment on the validity of the claims, but if this deal does indeed get done, it will create "the world's seventh-largest mobile phone maker."
Kyocera gettin' serious about buying Sanyo's mobile biz? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 14 Sep 2007 13:16:00 EST. Remember that Sprint roadmap we mentioned not long ago? There was talk of an SCP-4930 replacement dubbed "S1" reportedly dropping in October, and what we're seeing now in the FCC would pretty much back up that statement. Sanyo's got a confidentiality agreement in full effect here, sadly, but we can make out from the ID label documentation that we're pretty clearly dealing with a candybar of some sorts. Despite the naming convention, we've been hearing that the S1 will slot in lower than the high-end (at the time, anyway) M1, so don't get your hopes up that Sanyo's going to blow us all away here with some 8GB music monster. Still, though, good to see that the beleaguered manufacturer is still reppin' strong on Sprint.
Sanyo S1 hits the FCC originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 13 Sep 2007 19:11:00 EST. It's a warm, fuzzy feeling, ain't it? Anyway, let's have a look: Palm is said to come swinging in with two, the 500 on the low end with a $99 price point on October 14 and an 800w ("w" stands for Windows Mobile 6 here, friends) up top -- though the latter doesn't grace shelves until Q1 of '08. Novatel gets down with an updated version of the U720 dubbed U727 (what else?) come September 30. Sanyo meanwhile should add the S1 candybar to replace the SCP-4930 on October 14, but November 4 is allegedly when things really start to heat up. That day should bring the LG LX260, RIM BlackBerry Pearl 2, HTC Vogue, and the UTStarcom PX-00, a low-cost Rev A data card to replace the PX-500. The Motorola Q9c -- possibly with GSM international roaming -- should drop by a little later in November, while a dual-mode CDMA / GSM rendition of the Samsung BlackJack replaces the IP-830w early next year. Again, this is all unconfirmed, but it seems plausible enough. First up was the Palm Centro (also coined Gandolf and Treo 800), which you've already seen plenty of earlier today. Moving on, the Sprint Touch (read: CDMA) was said to be rockin' a potent 400MHz CPU, and it also touted EV-DO, 128MB of RAM, a two-megapixel camera, built-in GPS "to be activated in a Rev A upgrade," and a likely launch date in November. Furthermore, an EV-DO BlackBerry Pearl was on display along with a "petite candybar" from Sanyo, the sliding LG Rumor, and the Sprint Airave home cell site (once known as the Samsung Ubicell). We know you're craving the dirt on all of the aforementioned gizmos, so be sure and hit the read link for the full skinny.
Sprint event showcases CDMA Touch, LG Rumor, and more originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 10:28:00 EST. That's what recent reports are suggesting, anyway, with a sale rumored to be going down "soon" to the tune of "several billion yen." That could be music to Sanyo's ears following several glum years of net losses -- shedding itself of a valuable operating unit could give the company some much-needed spending cash and give its phone lineup a shot at increasing its market presence in the hands of a more motivated parent. No word on when exactly this'll be going down; with some 38.5 billion yen (about $324 million) in revenue in the last fiscal year, though, it seems like this could be a relatively inexpensive opportunity for a new player to waltz in and make a serious play against bigger competitors.
Sanyo handset division sale imminent? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 30 Jul 2007 03:12:00 EST. Sprint has yet to make any official mention of this phone's existence, but we've seen just about enough evidence to convince ourselves that the Katana DLX is the real deal. Positioned as a slightly higher-end rendition of the Katana II, the DLX mercifully adds the EV-DO data that both the II and the original Katana are sorely lacking. How do we know? Well, there's the FCC filing of course, but Sanyo has now seemingly admitted that the Katana DLX is the real deal and promises a near-term launch (think July) on Sprint. Other features include a microSD slot, 1.3 megapixel camera, and Bluetooth with A2DP, making this one a solid midrange offering if flips (or Sanyos) are your thing. Check it in "Platinum Ice," "Pink Satin," and "Champagne" -- pictured in that order -- when it hits shelves.

Update: It's on Sprint's site, all official-like. $129.99 on contract after rebates.
Sanyo fesses up to Katana DLX for Sprint originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sat, 14 Jul 2007 22:37:00 EST.
